Gibson Chief New G'town GC
| Our New Washington V (aka “Is K Street the New Wall Street?”): this Wednesday morning at the Reagan Building. Big cast to make us all smart about how Washington is changing amid crisis and response, and what the business opportunities are. Sign up now. |

| A week from today, Stephanie Tsacoumis heads back to school. No, she doesn't have outstanding credits; she’s been appointed Georgetown University’s new General Counsel. |
| |
Stephanie recently wrapped up a six-year term as co-partner in charge of Gibson Dunn’s DC office, where she’s been since ’96. A graduate of William and Mary and UVA law, Stephanie tells us that she’s been “bleeding Hoya blue” ever since she became an adjunct prof at the GU Law Center in ’01. She’s expecting broad responsibilities: one day reviewing employment contracts for GU’s new campus in Doha, Qatar; the next, addressing whether students really do have an inalienable “right to party.” (Wasn’t that settled in Keg Stand v. Gravity?)

Stephanie leaves behind a strong track-record of M&A, corporate, and pro bono work. The thing she’ll miss most? Mentoring young associates. One way she plans to maintain that feeling: staying involved with the Girl Scouts of America. Every summer, she goes camping with the local chapter.

AN EVENT YOU SHOULDN’T MISS (if we do say so ourselves)
| |
Yes, we know we put on a lot of events. But the one we’re hosting Wednesday morning at the Reagan Building may be among the most interesting. As we near the end of the Obama era’s first year, what new money and power is flowing into Washington? What will be its impact on the legal, tech, and association communities? Public figures these days don’t like to be dubbed “Czar” of this or that, but ”Federal Stimulus Czar” is how Earl Devaney is informally known to the financial crisis cognoscenti. Chairman of the Recovery Accountability and Transparency Board, this is a relatively rare public appearance. He’ll talk about how recovery money is being spent and its impact in Washington. More info.

You remember former Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, of course. We’re pleased he’ll also be with us to discuss the state of our homeland security and the trends and impact of federal spending on it. The former lawyer will also discuss the business challenges and opportunities involved.
| |
We’re also delighted to be hosting Eric Trump, left, EVP of Development and Acquisitions for the Trump Organization, here with his dad in a picture we snapped last spring. They were announcing the purchase of the former Lowe’s Island, now Trump National. Why did they decide to buy their first property in Washington? How do they now look at DC from their perch in New York? Are we hayseeds or America’s new trend setters?

| Dismissing Disorderly |
| |
We were at the DC Courthouse Friday morning to hear Pepin Tuma (left, formerly of Gibson Dunn) testify before the DC Council’s Committee on Public Safety and the Judiciary regarding the city’s disorderly conduct statute. Pepin was arrested on U St. last July for disorderly conduct after shouting “I hate the police” at a group of police officers. The arresting officer chided him back, calling him “a faggot.” And now no one is happy. Pepin, who is seeking to have his record expunged, described the current statute as “antiquated and ineffective.” Gibson Dunn’s Bennett Bordon and ACLU legislative counsel Steven Block were on hand in support of Pepin.

We stopped by the BADC Young Lawyers Section happy hour at Mediterra in Adams Morgan Friday and snapped 2nd year law students Elise Helgensen, Murti Patel, Shilpa Deshpande, and Bhavik Patel, in town for the Equal Justice Works Conference and Career Fair. As if holding the attention of his three female companions wasn't enough, Bhavik had plenty of reasons to be confident heading into the weekend: earlier in the day, he tells us, he sunk a 3-pointer in the Supreme Court gym. (We promised not to reveal that later John Paul Stevens blocked his dunk; we stand by that promise.)
