| Former Solicitor of Labor Greg Jacobs is still committed to lowering unemployment, starting with his own. He recently joined Winston & Strawn, and we checked in with him this week. |
| |
Greg tells us that unemployment for lawyers isn't so bad—only 3%; however, it’s double the norm. Not to worry, Greg says there’s no medicine like laughter; that’s why he’s on the editorial board of the Green Bag, an entertaining law journal founded by a former editor of the U. Chicago Law Review in 1997. It’s also why, after observing how TV shows 24 and The West Wing inaccurately portrayed the protocol for emergency presidential succession, he set the record straight with an article in the Green Bag.

| |
In addition to offbeat law journal articles, The Green Bag gives away bobblehead dolls of famous Supreme Court Justices (like this Rehnquist we snapped Greg playing with). It also administers an online “fantasy law” competition—players earn points when the lawmakers they’ve drafted issue press releases, pass bills, and survive scandals. Greg’s likely to pick a few Obama Administration DoL officials for his team: he tells us they’re planning 30% budget increases in all enforcement areas excluding union fee disclosures.

Last night, we stopped by Seyfarth Shaw in the West End for a fundraiser benefiting Room to Read, a non-profit that's built over 5,000 libraries (now 6/day) for impoverished children around the world. Here’s Seyfarth’s Jack Toner, Sara Farabow, Jennefer Garcia, and R2R’s Craig Herb. Craig tells us that Twitter recently decided to follow Seyfarth’s lead and make R2R its signature charity.

When we popped in to Pat Taylor & Assoc. earlier this week, we found the 8-person recruiting group’s prez Pat Taylor, and contract attorney program manager Amy Emmert making their way through a tall stack of CVs. Amy, a former Fulbright scholar, tells us that the gov’t is hungry for Freedom of Information Act experts and lawyers with experience filing financial disclosure forms. A 10-handicap golfer, Pat says she often sizes up candidates on the links (so be polite, and let her putt first).

One of our 30-under-30 stars, Pillsbury international energy expert Elina Teplinski, tells us that she and her Pomeranian, Samba (in dog years, that’s 210-under-210) are in it to win it. No, not the 2010 Iditarod dogsled race; Samba is competing in the All American Pet Brands Cutest Dog Competition, with a chance to win up to $1 million. If Samba triumphs, Elina says she’ll donate all the winnings to local pet rescue groups.
