Lawyers Can

Rock??

If you like the bands below, you'll love U2. FedExField. September 29. Be there.

For six years, the Battle of the Law Firm Bands has provided a much-needed public service: making lawyers feel vaguely hip for one night a year.  Oh yeah, it also raised a lot of money for Gifts for the Homeless last night at the Black Cat, before a throng of 400, and Bisnow was on hand to sample the beer and music.

The event is the brainchild of Kirkland’s Walter Lohmann, right, and the idea is simple: bands made up of lawyers play the venue from 7 til midnight, with crowd favorites voted up with dollars. (“Chicago rules” apply—vote early and often). Walter’s fellow board member, IRS attorney Larry Williams, demonstrates the proper way to stuff the ballot box. He says that as soon as Walter presented the idea to the board, he knew the concept would be a hit. Now, let’s rock.

We pegged Alston & Bird’s entry, The Quitterz, as rock rebels all the way, what with that grammar-defying “z” in its name. We would tell you what song vocally impressive associate Colleen Wright is singing, but honestly we can’t remember—we were too shocked by the news that she gave birth a mere six weeks ago. Congrats to Colleen, who appears to be balancing her motherly and rock n’ roll duties extremely well.

Other news we picked up: Williams & Connolly’s Dane Butswinkas informs us that his partner Howard Gutman is Obama’s pick for Ambassador to Belgium. (Is that a step up or down from co-starring in a movie with Tim Robbins?) Dane, Verizon counsel Ann Sagerson, center, and Ann’s lil sis Ashley—just a fan, not a lawyer—came out to support the Williams & Connolly musical juggernaut Dangerous Communication Device, which took the most dough last year (and wins our vote for best band name).

You can tell these people are important by those backstage passes. Gifts for the Homeless board members Anne Delhommeau of Ogletree Deakins (rocking the ripped-sleeve tee); Sarah Albertson, who hopped from Arnold & Porter to the SEC (and, we should note, was not tipsy in the least—that’s just our blinding flash); Laurel Glassman, GFTH VP of Development when she isn’t busy at White & Case; and Winston & Strawn’s Ronnie Benson.

A few more ironic t-shirts and you might have thought it was just another night at the Black Cat.

Baker Botts came out in force with a mix of summers and veteran associates. That’s seventh-year Sabita Soneji on the right, but to protect the innocent we’re not going to name those two guys who appear to be double-fisting their drinks.

Sidley Austin’s band entry, Big Sur, busted out a few warhorses like Jethro Tull’s “Aqualung.”

At first we thought this was a band called “The Bike Messengers,” but no, it’s actually a nice group of Crowell summer associates: Michael Kuppersmith, Katie Zimmerman, Ana Martinez, Derek Mullins, and Brian Concklin. As far as the partners making hiring decisions at Crowell know, they were all vigorously supporting Crowell’s entry, Pleather.

Kirkland summers Igor Helman and Jamie Crown (far left) brought friend Ann Vale and Igor’s wife Ainsley MacLean out for the festivities. If they wanted to demonstrate that lawyers can have fun, they picked the right event.
