| With sunshine and temperatures in the high 50’s at last beckoning this weekend, we are hopeful that the Board of Trade’s 91st “Mid-Winter Dinner” last night at the Washington Hilton doesn’t live up to its name, but is a harbinger of spring and schmooze. |

Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley, right, plays acoustic guitar in a Baltimore rock band, but this is not it, although the others are nothing if not good vocalists: Board of Trade president Jim Dinegar, DC Mayor Adrian Fenty, last year’s BOT chairman John Kane, and 2010 chair Jim Dyke. 700 other guests rocked out without music.

We also snapped Tompkins Builders SVP George Kreis, PJ Clarke’s Emily Billotti, and Requity Real Estate’s Bill Krokowski. Emily’s working to bring PJ Clarkes to the old Olives space at 1600 K St. NYC’s iconic American dining saloon, known for its signature long bar and brass features, is scheduled to open for business this September. And news flash: Bill (and wife Sherry) are expecting a boy in July!

You may not know it from first glance, but the folks packed into the Crystal City BID table are aspiring street artists with work on display at G40 – The Summit: a month-long art event featuring 500 artists from across the country on display now at 223 23rd St. in Arlington. Crystal City BID President Angie Fox, Federal City Council CEO John Hill, Former Deputy Mayor Davis Watts, Monument Realty co-founder Jeff Neal, OPEFM’s Warren Graves, Crystal City BID’s Joe Petty and Rob Mandle, Lowe Enterprises SVP Harmar Thompson, AED’s Terry Holzheimer, and Vornado/Chares E. Smith SVP Mitch Bonanno. This group can usually be found somewhere outside the party with cigars in hand.

INVESTORS ACROSS THE POND

Investor demand continues to heat up the capital markets but it hasn’t translated into actual activity yet, says Jones Lang’s Mid-Atlantic Market Director Mike Ellis (that’s a fancy title meaning he runs the region for JLL). Investors from Germany, the UK, and Ireland are all trying to figure out how to get opportunities with core assets in the region. The corporate side can be summed up with what Mike calls “right-sizing”—companies trying to figure out whether their current space fits their business model. While there will be some job growth in the DC market toward the end of the year, he says it won’t translate into a lot of net absorption because people have become more efficient, creating space in their current offices. Want more? Mike will join 15 other industry super stars at Bisnow’s first annual Washington Real Estate Forum, March 16. Sign up here!

MEET OUR SPONSOR: GEORGETOWN’S MASTERS IN REAL ESTATE
|

Students in Georgetown University’s Master of Professional Studies in Real Estate program get hands on experience (didn't that used to be called field trips?), even the opportunity to wear nifty looking safety jackets and hard hats, as when they recently toured the construction site for the U.S. Institute of Peace. That same evening, the program hosted a career panel on the real estate job market inside the Hariri Building, the remarkable new business school building on Georgetown’s main campus. A panel featured CoStar recruiting manager Kristen Reese, national real estate search firm founder Spencer Clarke, and McCormick Group finance and law firm recruiter (and loyal Hoya alumnus) Dave Magness.
|
| |
 |
| At the career panel: GU student Newmark Knight’s associate director Mani Milan, GU student and Turner Construction project engineer Stephen Hattwick, Associate Dean Chuck Schilke, Co-Star’s Kristen Reese, GU program manager Christy Houston, GU program director Jill Phaneuf, S.R. Clarke founder Spencer Clarke, and McCormick Group’s Dave Magness. Panelists top tips: Map out your personal path and find the right career moves that lead you to better opportunities; do research on companies and try to align yourself with their needs; find a mentor; network at industry events; seize downturns as your chance to learn better career tactics; and (of course) don’t give up. Kristen talked of having both skill and will in a position, and Spencer spoke of the difference between finding a job and finding a career. |
