GSA ON THE MOVE

You’re not going to believe this, but our great sponsor DBI Architects recently turned 35, making it one of the oldest DC-based design firms. Please see more in story below.

Everyone’s been waiting for GSA to pick some “swing space” to use while its own HQ undergoes renovation from 2011 to 2016. Wednesday it announced the winner for the 288k SF it needs: StonebridgeCarras’ One Constitution Square at 1275 First St. NE.

If this looks familiar, yes, that’s because we wrote about the 345k SF spec building (designed to LEED Platinum) on Nov 9. Congrats to Studley’s Neil Levy, Julie Rayfield, Mett Miller, and Todd Valentine on finding this roof for 1200 GSA employees. And congrats to Cassidy & Pinkard Colliers’ Darian LeBlanc, who repped the owner, for finding GSA!

GSA HQ 1800 F St. NW

Here’s a sneak peek at what the current GSA HQ 1800 F St. NW will look like after modernization of the century-old limestone building. Sustainability Officer Stephen Leeds says it will “showcase how GSA is using innovative technologies and alternative energy solutions” to create high-performance green federal buildings with $5.5B received under the Recovery Act. (No word on if Stephen was picked for the job based on his last name.) The building’s getting a LEED facelift complete with a light-filled atrium, 800 photovoltaic panels to generate renewable energy, and water conservation tools.

EVEN MORE STUDLEY

Tom Fulcher and David Lipson

Don’t read further if you’re getting sick of praise for Studley, but we also snapped this of Tom Fulcher and David Lipson, who repped McGuireWoods as it solidified plans to move after a decade at 1050 Connecticut Ave. (Washington Square) to 2001 K. The law firm signed the 45k SF lease with plans to move about 80 employees in late 2010. Managing Partner Steve Kittrell says LEED features and having two floors (leaving room to expand) were incentives to move.

Bie Chu Lee

During our visit, we bumped into new employee Bie Chu Lee. Seeing as how new hires are rare these days, we decided to snap a pic and ask the recent Northwestern grad about the gig. After some time with Tishman Speyer, Bie moved to Studley to do market analysis, strategic planning, and financial modeling. The firm also hired former intern and Stanford grad Jeff Harps as a financial analyst.

OLD TOWN EXPANSION

the Atrium Building on 277 S. Washington in Old Town Alexandria

Forget downsizing. Law firm Oliff & Berridge just announced a renewal and expansion (from 78k to 92k SF) in Old Town at the Atrium Building on 277 S. Washington. CB’s Meredith LaPier (who with colleagues Pat Marr and Sally Wilson repped the firm) tells us O&B chose to stay in Alexandria in part because of the proximity to the Patent and Trademark Office.

MEET OUR SPONSOR: DBI ARCHITECTS

DBI Architects Team

The youthful look of DBI’s team at this Oktoberfest party held at its award-winning Virginia office disguises its strength: an experienced staff. Its four principals have been there for over 25 years and the senior staff in DC and Virginia average 18. The advantage: clients get continuity and have long-term relationships with projects managers. Clients like Google, for which DBI recently designed offices in DC and Reston. Also: Lockheed Martin’s HQ modernization in Bethesda and the recently completed Twinbrook Office Building for Uniwest—both seeking a minimum of LEED Silver. There’s one more way to describe DBI: reigning champ. It took home Northern Virginia NAIOP’s Award of Excellence for its design of Cassidy and Pinkard’s new office in Tysons Corner. Happy 35, DBI!

JBG’S BEN JACOBS TO JOIN DEC 7 PROGRAM

We are proud to announce a major addition to the speaker lineup for our Dec 7 Breakfast & Schmooze, in addition to Carlyle Group co-founder David Rubenstein and forecaster Steve Fuller: JBG co-founder Ben Jacobs, above. Ben is well known for his modesty, and would be the first to say that JBG’s legendary history and success is a team product built upon the shoulders of countless colleagues. But aficionados know he has been the heart and soul of one of Washington’s greatest homegrown business institutions that has become a major success story in American commercial real estate. Like Rubenstein and Fuller, Ben will speak to the topic “2010” and try to put current challenges and opportunities in perspective based on nearly half a century of experience. We are excited to have him join us. More info.
