SAIC Moves to Tysons

A big salute to sponsor Harkins Builders. This great design-build and general contractor handles commercial, multi-family, military, mixed use, senior living, rehab, and historic renovations. Please see story below.

Okay, government contractor SAIC has been here for 30 years, but now it’s decided to move its HQ from San Diego to Fairfax.

VA Governor Tim Kaine
No word yet on whether it’ll be building new space for the extra 1,200 employees it's adding. Yesterday, we were on hand for the announcement from VA guv Tim Kaine. He says the company is the fifth Fortune 500 to move its HQ to Virginia during his term. The company will keep 4,500 employees in its San Diego office, while adding to its 16k in McLean over the next three years.

BRAC Builders Get More Time

Jim Moran, Arlington County Board member Mary Hynes, Alexandria’s Mayor Bill Euille, and Arlington County Board Chairwoman Barbara Favola at BRAC Announcement

Next Wednesday’s deadline for local DoD facilities to comply with strict BRAC anti-terrorism standards (or be denied lease renewals) has been extended by two years. The reprieve was announced Tuesday at the Arlington Courthouse by Cong. Jim Moran; without the delay, he says thousands of DoD employees would've been forced to relocate to BRAC-compliant facilities being constructed at Ft. Belvoir; his studies show that would've caused 3-4 hour delays on I-95 most workdays. Here’s Jim flanked by Arlington County Board member Mary Hynes, Alexandria’s Mayor Bill Euille, and Arlington County Board Chairwoman Barbara Favola.

Shooshan Company prez John Shooshan (here with Arlington Country BRAC coordinator Andrea Morris), who's leasing 353k SF to DARPA in Founders Square, hopes that even with security concerns, emphasis will continue to be placed on metro accessibility. Andrea says people aren’t fleeing cities to escape terrorism; they’re gravitating to them in search of the higher living standards.

Davis Interiors SVP Peter Nowland, Cassidy & Pinkard Colliers' Adrian Conforti, WDG Architecture's John Lowe with honoree Adrian Fenty
We were delighted to be a media sponsor of that great cause, the Boys & Girls Clubs, at their annual lunch yesterday at the Grand Hyatt. Here we snapped Davis Interiors SVP Peter Nowland, Cassidy & Pinkard Colliers' Adrian Conforti, WDG Architecture's John Lowe with honoree Adrian Fenty. (If we have to tell you he's mayor of DC, you're reading the wrong publication.) Congrats also to other honorees Bob Pinkard and Doug Donatelli.

The group discussed many dramatic new trends occurring in the relationship between law firms and corporate law departments. Watch Legal Bisnow for more detail on what was said.

Extravaganza!

Board of Trade president Jim Dinegar and his events director Christine Salvador and assistant Pam Chanthavongsa

Hats off to Board of Trade president Jim Dinegar and his events director Christine Salvador and assistant Pam Chanthavongsa for putting on one of the greatest parties in memory a couple nights ago. For their annual Fall Business Classic, they took over the entire American History Museum—and you could schmooze, eat great food (Ridgewells), and get smart seeing all those exhibits, simultaneously. Next up for BOT: a forum this coming Tuesday morning on H1N1 and how your firm can prepare for possible business disruptions if the virus spreads. More info: www.BOT.org.

Meet our Sponsor: Harkins Builders

Harkins Builders' Overlook at Oxon Run

Harkins wants "They said it couldn’t be done" projects. Take Overlook at Oxon Run (formerly Parkside Terrace), which opened last Friday in Southeast DC. Summoned by CPDC and architect Wiencek + Associates after others ran over budget, Harkins transformed the 12-story apartment building into 167 affordable workforce housing and 149 independent senior living apartments. Harkins addressed the project’s complexities—eg, multiple funding sources, a masonry skin that was peeling off—with cost effective solutions. For one: structural metal stud framing supported by concrete decks to provide backup for the exterior wall system. And Harkins does more than affordable housing: Witness the new Allegro apartments on 14th St, and Twinbrook Station in Rockville. Find more here.
