Tax Man

Join TiE DC on April 20 as Venture Philanthropy Partners's chairman Mario Morino discusses the intersection of entrepreneurship and community service. Top of the Town, Arlington. 6:30pm. Info

Where else would we be on April 15 than with Treasury CIO Michael Duffy. And he says you can help the IRS. There's an initiative in the FY11 budget to modernize its individual tax payer system: "If you have ideas of how best to do this, we’d love to hear from you."
Treasury CIO Michael Duffy
Michael, speaking this morning at Mountaintop Marketing’s Peak Series Breakfast at the Metro Center Marriott, says the IT systems used for the Bank Secrecy Act (cool title, but we'll stick with Tom Clancy reads) also needs an overhaul. And for virtualization folks, Michael says the agency has at least 60 data centers (and possibly a lot more, he’s still counting) and is looking to consolidate. He’s also looking to redo Treasury.gov and host it in a public cloud.

It seems Michael is more popular than a refund check. When it comes to small business, he finds opportunities in web-based services, as the agency is looking for smaller contracts. And when it comes to selling yourself to the government, don’t oversell yourself. “You don’t need to hit a home run, but at least get to first base.”

Teresa Lewis
We caught Teresa Lewis, of Treasury’s Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization, mid-laugh. She says Treasury has given 32.5% of its IT work to small business (its goal is 28%), but it's looking to give more work to HUB-zone and service-disabled veteran-owned businesses. “If you’re not one of these set-asides, partner with one and your chances of getting work increase.”

TeqCorner Booming!
TeqCorner's Myra Fitzwater and Computrad's Scott Moors
Yesterday in Tysons, we dropped in on TeqCorner's Myra Fitzwater (here with client Scott Moors of Computrad), who tells us the community office center is at 91% capacity and has seen a doubling of virtual clients (from about 30 to 60) over the past year. There's no secret sauce for how it's done, just a secret protein. Myra drives in each day from West Virginia, where she runs a farm that includes 14 chickens that deliver fresh eggs; she gives them as gifts to TeqCorner tenants (and our lucky reporter, who made them into a nice omelet before heading out this morning).
