Jill Biden & the JTCC!

Join us for our next Schmoozarama: an exclusive look at DC's new three-floor taqueria and tequileria from Masa 14 masterminds Richard Sandoval and Kaz Okochi. Next Tuesday 5/17. El Centro D.F. Food, drinks, and great networking. Sign up now!

Last night we went to two great events for the area’s top tennis program and a top charity, but we’re starting with the Lourie Center Benefit Reception where we went to meet the US’ Second Lady.

We snapped the VP’s wife—and NoVa Community College prof—Dr. Jill Biden on the rooftop of Room & Board Wednesday night. The event raised $75k to serve behavioral, emotional, and developmental problems in infants and young children at the Lourie Center.

Catherine Leggett, MoCo exec Ike 's wife, accepted the Public Service Award on behalf of her husband. She’s with Adventist's Elizabeth Franzino, Lourie Center's Jim Litsinger, MGG's Dr. Larry Winderlife, board treasurer Tom Burlin, and his wife Chris.

Inside were skewers of salmon and pineapple, but outside there was beautiful weather. DOC's Ellen Herbst, honorary co-chair Jill McGovern, ITA's Joel Secundy, Patricia Lloyd and Dan Addison.

JTCC!

The DC area is lucky to have one of the world’s top tennis facilities at its doorstep, the Junior Tennis Champions Center, JTCC, in College Park. Last night we went to its gala at the residence of the Swedish Ambassador. Former Mayor Adrian Fenty and his wife Michelle are big supporters since their twins train there; they’ll go full time starting in the fall.

CashEdge’s Brett Weinroth chaired the sold-out event. He’s with his wife Leah, a freelance journalist, Walker & Dunlop's Willy Walker, and his wife, Georgetown prof Sheila Walker. Guests walked around the beautiful grounds sipping cocktails and watched rising juniors play on the courts before sitting in the tent for a Swedish barbeque.

NBC’s Jim Handley emceed the awards ceremony. Luckily, he only had to walk across the street from his office to get to there. He’s with colleague Bob Okun, who’s starting The O-Team July 1, and Bethesda Country Club tennis director Frank Hatten.

SDI’s Nina Benton, whose husband Ray is JTCC CEO, is with Bettan Laughlin and Washington Fine Properties’ Cindy Howar.

Miriam's Kitchen!

Last night we also went to the National Building Museum for 100 Bowls of Compassion benefiting Miriam's Kitchen. CNN's Taryn Fixel, Miriam's Kitchen's Sara Gibson, US-India Business Council's Melissa Frakman, Frontier CFO Elaine Fide, Baker-Tilly's Raina Rose Tagle (who’s chaired this for 10 years and tells us she wants to find a successor), and board member Deloitte's Geoff Dudgeon.

The silent auction offered special experiences with staycations, dinner with a restaurant critic and rides in food trucks. We snapped some of the artists who donated their work: Dept. of Treasury's Mike Seto, Kari Minnick, and Emberley SOS's Daniel Emberley.

The volunteer-prepared food followed the Silk Road, starting with Japanese lobster in a smoky bacon dumpling. Apex founders' Margaret Boryczka and Shashi Gupta said the food was as great as always. They’re with attorney Tobey Marzouk and his wife Molly.

Volunteering at the kitchen is so popular, there’s a six month wait. Many end up going into the culinary field, so look out for Hill staffer Noelle Melton, Tracy Reines, and Treasury's Edward Garnett.
