Last night we went to the sixth annual Pearls of Purpose Gala at the Carnegie Institution for Science.

The event was organized by FAIR Girls (Free Aware Inspired Restored). We snapped development director Kate Marie Grinold, Board member Olivia Doherty, co-founder Andrea Powell, and Advisory Board member Alexandra Nicole Senyi de Nagy-Unyom.

Guests enjoyed hors d'oeuvres, Georgetown Cupcakes, VeeV Açai eco-friendly cocktails, champagne, and the WSOP Jazz Quartet. Here, volunteer Makiko Hotoda, FAIR Girls outreach manager Priya Dhanani, and host committee member Amber Francis.

There was jewelry for purchase by the DC JewelGirls, an economic empowerment and therapeutic art program that gives teens a chance for brighter futures. Here, FAIR Girls fellow Olivia Greenberg, Availor Group’s Katherine Kennedy, White House’s Vivian Graubard, and J Street Group’s Jen Corey.

When she was only 12, Teopista Katusiime was trafficked from rural Uganda and promised a good job to earn money for school. Instead, she endured years of domestic slavery and sexual abuse until she escaped. Now 18, she’s a FAIR Girls workshop leader assisting other survivors in Uganda.

Yesterday we also joined the Washington Nationals for its final home game of spring training. After the Nats fell to the Red Sox, local celebs took on Wounded Warrior Amputees in softball; we snapped both teams.

The celebs, including Mayor Vince Gray, DC Council Chair Kwame Brown, chefs Bryan Voltagggio and Spike Mendelsohn, ABC7’s Steve Chenevey, NBC’s Luke Russert, and ESPN’s Tony Reali, were coached by former ‘Skins Charles Mann. DC City Council member Jack Evans pitched; he gave up 12 runs in three innings.

The Wounded Warriors team, former soldiers who were injured in Iraq or Afghanistan, includes Army vets Brian Taylor Urrela and Greg Reynolds; they ensured the celebs wouldn’t avenge last year’s loss.

It was a rough night for former ‘Skins. Hall of Famer Darrell Green led off the game with a strike out and LaVar Arrington, despite wrestling base runners to the ground, couldn’t keep runs from pouring in. The Celebrity Team fell to the Wounded Warriors, 17-4.

Yesterday we also stopped by beautiful Georgetown estate Evermay for a reception honoring Overtures: S&R Foundation Artist Concert Series. We snapped the benefactors who started the foundation 12 years ago to support talented artists and scientists: Dr. Sachiko Kuno and Dr. Ryuji Ueno.

Critically acclaimed soprano Maki Mori sings tonight at the Kennedy Center; the other artists supported by Overtures perform through April 12 for the cherry blossoms centennial celebration.
