YESTERDAY
WITH REBNY,
515 MADISON,
& NYCREW

This is big: We're hosting our first ever NY Happy Hour & Schmooze, next Wednesday, May 20, 6pm-8pm. Join us and your fellow commercial real estate friends. No cover charge. Don't you want to say you were there when it all began? Click here to RSVP

For those who thought you'd find us resting after an event-filled day yesterday, think again. Bisnow was bright-eyed and bushy-tailed for another three events, starting with REBNY's "Brokers' Survival Guide" at its Mendik Education Center.

Who needs Dr. Phil when you've got CB Richard Ellis' Matt Van Buren, FirstService Williams' Leon Manoff, CB's Steve Siegel, Cushman & Wakefield's Joe Harbert, Winick's Ben Fox, and Grubb & Ellis' David Arena for advice? David says it's the best time in 25 years to be a real estate pro, even with deteriorating fundamentals. Brokers now influence decision making, Ben adds, which gives a terrific opportunity to build relationships. But have a quantified view of the market in order to have credibility, Matt notes.

We now present Life's Little Instruction Book: Channeling Paul Simon, Joe says, "Make a new plan, Stan," and for the next 100 days, invest in yourself, strengthen your skills, add an hour to your workday while subtracting one day monthly; go out for coffee, engage in charity and religious organizations, send letters instead of e-mails, and network. Leon adds to forget the sale, stop counting everyone else's money, and spot opportunities to create value. Know your markets, and look beyond New York, Steve notes.    (More photos)

OPEN 515!

Afterward we dropped by an open house at 515 Madison, which has space available for the first time in 11 years. Four tower floors have opened up, Newmark Knight Frank father-and-son team Eric and Jeff Gural tells us. The building just finished a full lobby restoration and expansion and newly renovated office space, including two pre-built floors. It's aiming for Silver LEED-EB, Eric adds, while the build-outs are going for Silver LEED-CI.

Does Studley's Craig Lemle (left) look like he just biked 25 miles? He did yesterday to train for a 200-mile ride from Westchester to Vermont coming the first weekend of June. He, Stephen Fishkin, and Winoker Realty's Bill Berkis were three of the 300 brokers on hand. Sure, the space was attractive, but so were the food and prizes like a $1k AmEx gift card. Eric joked that it was the first time his father didn't object to his having a party. (More photos)

NYCREW'S WHITE PAPER

Last night, we also had the chance to meet CREW's national head honchess Jane Snoddy Smith of Fulbright & Jaworski, who traveled from Texas (no NY black wardrobe for her!) to help present the CREW National White Paper to NYCREW. We are in a historical and critical time, she says, a mix of bearish and bullish. CREW, which has grown 25% over five years, calls '09 "the Year of the Member," and is starting a leadership academy, holding a September convention in Boston, and is expanding internationally to Dubai and Denmark.

NYCREW officer and CREW industry research committee chair Barbara Champoux of Crowell & Moring presented the paper, noting that it's important to be a linear thinker yet creative at the same time. We're in a market of opportunity, and it's not about finding a job, but finding the right job. In order to do so, you have to be situational and demographically aware, give yourself a candid assessment, have passion, and be proactive. She mentions opportunities in distress, bankruptcy, accounting, advisory, valuation and several other related industries. (More photos)

No Hollywood party is complete without Paris Hilton; no real estate event is complete without Bisnow (but we dress more appropriately). Send invites and story ideas to amanda@bisnow.com
