Get ready to be hopped up on homemade beer as 3 Stars Homebrew Shop, at 6400 Chillum Place in Takoma Park opens today from 3 – 8 pm.
 
Founders and former home brewers Dave Coleman and Mike McGarvey tell us it’ll be a place to learn about the craft and gather with other enthusiasts. The retail shop will offer fresh yeast, hops, and beer-making kits. So bring a sample of your own ale—and grab a taco from the onsite Chupacabra food truck.

Bisnow has learned that Papadopolous Properties has signed Cleveland’s Paladar Latin Kitchen and Rum Bar to a large 8,000 SF at JBG’s North Bethesda Marketplace. It’s known for 100 kinds of rum and should open in the fall.

Steak ‘N’ Cheese
 

The newest addition to the Ray’s The Steaks family opened Monday at 1713 Wilson in Rosslyn, and it must have some avid fans with a name like the picture shows. Frustrated by the lack of steak ‘n’ cheese below the Mason-Dixon Line, owner Michael Landrum decided to create one. The mouthwatering shreds of greasy beef feature rib-eye steak, American and provolone cheeses, grilled onions and the soon-to-be-legendary condiment “groove grease.” If you’re hankering for Ray’s classic hell-burger with a twist, this will have you covered. And don’t forget the “heck sauce.”

Welcome PAUL

 

A new spot to break bread in Farragut North: on Monday PAUL opens its third DC location at the new Arent Fox building, 1000 Connecticut Ave. And sources tell us the French bakery chain will likely have two more locations in the metro area before the end of the year and another four in 2013. Besides fresh bread, they’re unveiling a new summer menu with basil baguettes and quinoa salad. If you’re one of their first 1,000 customers here, you get a free baguette or large macaroon with your order.

Bar Louie Grows into 'Burbs
 

Looking to build on its five-year run at Verizon Center, Bar Louie is expanding into the suburbs early this summer at Rockville Town Square. The nationwide chain, originally from Chicago, is popular for comfort food and overstuffed sandwiches, and unveiled a new drink menu last month. Still under construction and in the hiring phase, the new site likely will have signature event nights similar to its siblings, including local DJs and bands. The chain is one of several fast casual concepts owned by Sun Capital Partners (Boston Market and Friendly’s Ice Cream).

Brace yourselves, Columbia Heights dwellers. Kangaroo Boxing Club (3412 11th St., NW), the brick and mortar restaurant from the guys behind the food truck, Purveyors of Rolling Cuisine (PORC) Mobile is set to open in about a week. Owner Josh Saltzman assured us that all of the reasonably priced crowd favorites like the veggie sloppy joe and pulled pork sandwich from PORC Mobile will be available, in addition to non-barbecue dishes, vegetarian options and other experimentations in barbecue – think Oppenheimer and Bobby Flay’s love child.

2100 Prime Gets a New Chef
 
Chris Ferrier has taken the helm of 2100 Prime at The Fairfax at Embassy Row. The former executive chef of Boar’s Head Inn spent most of his career with Hyatt. Sources tell us Chris will enhance the farm-to-table American menu concept in Dupont Circle. His debut is June 6 at the Doukénie Wine Dinner, a three-course meal with pairings from the Virginia winery.

Closings and Openings

 

COMING: Pulpo (3407 Connecticut Ave. NW), Spanish tapas and American fusion from Floriana owner, Dino Tapper, opened last Friday in Cleveland Park. New food truck Captain Cookie and the Milk Man hit the streets this past Tuesday with fresh baked cookies and ice cream sandwiches. Brush off your lucky dice, the guys behind Atomic Billiards, Rocket Bar and others will open Board Room in Dupont Circle in August, with board games from the last 50 years.

 

GOING: Tenleytown will have to look elsewhere for Chicago deep-dish pizza—the 37-year-old original Armand’s Chicago Pizzera location will close its doors June 30. Heritage India in Dupont Circle isn’t quite closing, but they are moving and plan to announce the new location this summer. It looks like Georgetown’s Papa-Razzi has snapped its last shot—the restaurant closed last Monday. Both Sauca trucks and their Columbia Pike restaurant in Arlington have decided to extend their spring break permanently.
