Holder Tight

TOMORROW! Our big Friday event: Hot Topics in Law Firm/ General Counsel Relations. More info and sign up here.

Last night, the National Bar Association honored Eric Holder and the 13 surviving founding members of the Congressional Black Caucus at the Renaissance hotel.

ABA President Carolyn Lamm and NBA prez Mavis Thompson with Eric Holder

We snapped ABA President Carolyn Lamm and NBA prez Mavis Thompson with the guest of honor, as members filtered in from a late vote on the Hill. Eric praised his boss (President Obama, for those of you foggy on the chain of command) as a “great lawyer” and spoke about how the founding members of the CBC paved the way for African-Americans like himself to rise to the highest levels of government.

We snapped CNN legal analyst, and event MC, Sunny Hostin on the sidelines finalizing her remarks.

Namaste, Nixon Peabody

This answers the question of how Nixon Peabody’s Jeff Lesk plans on dealing with the additional responsibility and stress of his new position: Managing Partner. We found him in the 100-lawyer office’s interior rock garden. “Namaste,” says Jeff, who tells us that he’s eager to take advantage of his firm’s strength in gov’t assisted transactions and get in early on the opportunities for public private partnerships being created by stimulus spending. He also wants to expand that firm’s pro-bono and non-profit work. Maybe he’ll start by offering the spinning classes he now teaches at Energy Fitness?

Jeff got his start working in the GC’s office at HUD and was a driving force behind the firm’s Legally Green campaign. (NP’s 17 offices worldwide now regularly swap best practices for greening their offices.) Jeff tells us he’s excited to be heading up the DC office because of the overlap taking place among federal agencies: "For the first time, HUD, Transportation, EPA, and Energy Secretaries are all talking with one another." Jeff tells us he plans on "connecting the dots" between his firm’s practice groups to turn the DC office into a one-stop shop for the multi-faceted, inter-agency projects that result from this increasing integration.

ABA Journal Rides Again

Yesterday, we stopped by the libertarian-leaning Institute for Justice’s 35-person Ballston office to meet with its president, Chip Mellor, a self-described idealist recently anointed one of the ABA Journal’s 50 Legal Rebels. The Institute, which Chip founded 18 years ago, is a national public interest law firm. When not providing pro bono defense to clients as diverse as hot dog vendors, cab drivers, and interior designers, his team uses its $10M annual budget to educate the public about protecting economic liberty, property rights, school choice, and the First Amendment.

We snapped the Journal editor Ed Adams showing off some Rebels swag during the Legal Rebels Tour. Ed, who got his start reporting for American Lawyer magazine founder Steve Brill, tells us that Chip was chosen as Legal Rebel because he brings a sense of humor to his advocacy work. For evidence of this rare phenomenon, and a hearty laugh, click here.

Here’s John McQuiston, Rachel Zahorsky, Ed, and Molly McDonough, the ABA Journal Legal Rebels Tour ’09 crew, standing next to their signature black SUV. You can follow their exploits at LegalRebels.com/tour. We’ll be joining them for a joint Bisnow/ABA Journal tweet-up at the National Press Club’s Reliable Source Bar Friday at 5. Bring some story leads, and we’ll let you hang.
