A MERRY CHRISTMAS
|
|
| Happy holidays to everyone. We're on a reduced publication schedule for the next week. So if you don't hear from us, don't immediately add us to your wish list. We'll be back. |

| We always thought real estate types hibernated in winter, dreaming of sugar plums and dogleg lefts. Our mistake. More than 80 CRE professionals from AIA Dallas, BOMA Dallas, CREW Dallas, NAIOP, NTCAR, TEXO and ULI North Texas recently helped The Salvation Army at the young professionals “Together We Give” event. |

Here’s Pillar Commercial’s Nick Clark and C. Pharr’s Leah Ekmark at the Salvation Army Christmas and Disaster Center in Dallas. Leah, TREC Young Guns publicity chairwoman, says volunteering here was great for giving back and networking. Her day job has her promoting client McCarthy Building Cos in work on the new Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre and the HQ for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas.

Leah says TREC wants this project to serve as the catalyst for an annual event centered around volunteerism. The idea is to unite the young real estate community, while creating a better Dallas. This project lays the groundwork for connecting our groups more in 2010, she adds.

| DIVERSITY DAY |
| |
 |
|
The Real Estate Council hosted its second Diversity Reception earlier this month at Corgan’s HQ in downtown Dallas; speakers addressed the glass ceiling (no LEED points for those) and how they overcame career obstacles. K Strategies Group prez Katrina Keyes and Jackson-Shaw CFO Michele Wheeler both spoke. Michele, the first female chairwoman for TREC, says she had strong female role models, including a grandmother who owned a Lubbock department store. Her mom was a real estate broker, so Michele thought all women were professionals. She says there were many times she was not invited to the private country clubs, the dove hunts, or the guys’ golf trips, but those days are passed.

Andrews Kurth’s Tamaron Houston and The Beck Group’s Courtney Emich organized the event, which had 100 executives. Tamaron is working on acquisition of hotel properties, while Courtney works on projects with the Dallas Regional Medical Center and Southwestern Theological Seminary in Fort Worth.

Comerica Bank’s Kevin Crayton, Inwood National Bank’s Michon Fulgham, and Corgan’s Mitch Paradise. Kevin’s plate is full working on multifamily construction projects, while Michon said she’s working with non-profit affordable housing developer Builders of Hope, which is a TREC beneficiary.
