Days after the announcement of CityCenter DC's April 2011 groundbreaking comes this: The Marriott Marquis convention
center hotel
is breaking ground Nov. 10, and it looks like it's
really gonna happen this time.

Washington Marriott Marquis Hotel next to Walter E. Washington Convention Center

With the closure of a $250M bond sale completed to help finance the project, Quadrangle and Capstone Development will launch 42-months of construction on the $520M 1,167-room hotel in two weeks and a day, Washington Convention and Sports Authority CEO Greg O'Dell told us this morning. It could have an immediate impact on booking since the convention center books three to five years in advance. The entire CBD could use more hotels, especially during peak season, considering market-specific demand from Congress and other groups. And more rooms are indeed in the works for O Street Market, CityCenter, and a site controlled by Marriott that sits just north of this one. Construction is expected to create 1,500 jobs, plus up to 1,000 more for hotel operation with the help of $2M in job training (a strength of Marriott's) as part of the funding, Greg says.

Paul Sicari, Becky Owens, Lois Zambo, and Ray Ritchey at Johnny's Halfshell at 400 N. Capitol, DC, on Oct. 25, 2010

Last night, Boston Properties and Clark Construction threw a
party hosting 120 McDermott Will & Emery attorneys to celebrate McDermott's new home at 500 N. Capitol (or at least it will be in 2012) on Capitol Hill. We snapped McDermott's Paul Sicari, Clark Enterprises' Becky Owens, Studley's Lois Zambo (tenant broker), and BP up-and-comer Ray Ritchey. The party was held at Johnny's Halfshell, just 1.5 blocks from their soon-to-be 165k SF office.

Art Santry, Phillip Thomas, and Zeke Dodson at Johnny's Halfshell at 400 N. Capitol, DC, on Oct. 25, 2010

The bus-tour guides who showed McDermott folks around the area-Cassidy Turley's Phillip Thomas, Art Santry, and Zeke Dodson-have 84 years of CRE experience among them, "and they finally achieved the title of bus captains," Lois says. We hear Art is making a run for "Bus Admiral."

Jackie Sinn, Tricia Wyse, and Melinda Simons at Johnny's Halfshell at 400 N. Capitol, DC, on Oct. 25, 2010

McDermott's Jackie Sinn, Tricia Wyse, and Melinda Simons were fans of the view of the Capitol and the public transportation options. We don't know if a Fourth of July party is in the works for 500 N. Capital's planned roof deck, but these ladies sure have an opinion on the matter. Tricia also suggested that the deck might just be a good location for a remote desk.

Bisnow Schmoozarette at National Museum of Women in the Arts on Oct. 25, 2010

Over 500 packed two floors at the National Museum of Women in the Arts last night for our first Schmoozarette-designed especially for women professionals. Them's some fancy digs.

Ewa Ojarovska, Susan Lacz, and Jen Becker Denney at Bisnow Schmoozarette at National Museum of Women in the Arts on Oct. 25, 2010

Beer, wine, cocktails, and gourmet food (now that's a party) were provided by our friends at Ridgewells Catering, repped here by sales director Ewa Ojarovska, CEO Susan Lacz, and senior event designer Jen Becker Denney. The event capped the first day on the job for Ewa, who called the festivities "fabulous." Susan and Jen were happy to show off their healthy menu (and the chocolate and dessert bar, which was quite popular) in front of such a large crowd. The trio also tells us of a special deal for Bisnow readers: Mention us when you book your holiday party with Ridgewells by Nov. 15 for 15% off.

Heidi Kallett at Bisnow Schmoozarette at National Museum of Women in the Arts on Oct. 25, 2010

And the first person many saw on their way into the networking area was Dandelion Patch CEO Heidi Kallett, who didn't have to twist many arms to get business cards for her fishbowl (drawing winners each received $250 to spend at one of Heidi's four locations). In addition to Vienna and Reston, Heidi opened Oct. 8 in Georgetown and Oct. 15 in Leesburg. Specializing in stationary, gifts, and all things bridal, Heidi expects many more stores to follow.

Bonnie Flippin, Phyllis Liebman, Kathy Barlow, Pam Zandy, Beth Ann Gannon, Kathryn Ciliberti, Wendy White, Bethany Allen, and Cynthia Bell at CREW in San Francisco in October 2010

We were in San Francisco last week to join CREW for its annual convention and caught up with some DC members: WorkSpaces' Bonnie Flippin, Vornado's Phyllis Liebman, Marsh USA's Kathy Barlow, Monument Realty's Pam Zandy, Nalex International's Beth Ann Gannon, DBI Architects' Kathyrn Ciliberti (DC president), Pillsbury's Wendy White, Monument's Bethany Allen (DC president-elect), and Mohawk Group's Cynthia Bell. So what's with the prize wheel? It's one of the marketing tools employed to promote next year's convention, to be held in DC.

Ann Marie Mehlert, Erica Leatham, Sara Todd, Julie Fishbein, and Dee Carl Metz at CREW in San Francisco in October 2010

All three of the DC-area CREW Network chapters (out of 70 in North America), with the help of Baltimore's women, will help host next year's convention and sent 35 women to San Francisco this year, where we caught up with MD reps: Garson Claxton's Ann Marie Mehlert, Ballard Spahr's Erica Leatham, Fannie Mae's Sara Todd (MD president-elect), Fishbein Democracy Investors' Julie Fishbein (MD president), and Maloney & Metz's Dee Carl Metz. Erica snagged a 20 Under 40 award at the event.

Michelle Kilby, Candace Chazen, Debbie Crouse, and Greta Perry at CREW in San Francisco in October 2010

Decked out for a pre-dinner reception were MKAssociates' Michelle Kilby, Commonwealth Land Title's Candace Chazen, Arent Fox's Debbie Crouse, and Mark Anderson Consultants' Greta Perry. Everyone in attendance was networking in overdrive to make connections and bring business back to DC, not to mention Michelle and Greta brought booths to the convention.

Rep. Jim Moran, Mary Hynes, Barbara Favola, Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille in September 2009

We borrowed one of our own archive pics of Rep. Jim Moran, flanked by Arlington County board members Mary Hynes and Barbara Favola and Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille, for the rare chance to make a good pun: Our CC event tomorrow is getting so "official," Jim will open it up (just announced today), laying out the local and federal vision for transformation. Sign up here.
