GREEN DAY

Congrats to great sponsor (and great law firm) Nixon Peabody, which just relocated June 1 to a fantastic new "green" office space at 300 South Riverside Plaza. Please see related story below.

Water, wind, light! No, we're not trying to summon Captain Planet, we're just talking with...

...YES Conservation's Mitch Furlett and GSY Energy's Andre De Rosa and James Middleton about the resources they're working to save with new products. The trio spoke yesterday at the Institute of Real Estate Management, where Mitch demonstrated how cheap it is to save water by handing out low-flow shower heads as part of the event’s gift bag. James says you can recoup the cost of a new lighting system now in less than two years with savings from installing low-energy lighting.  And Andre pointed out that Chicago doesn't actually live up to its nickname unless you count its rooftops, which fortunately register a 6 out of 10 on how much wind power a turbine can generate.

Happy Anniversary! Vranas & Chioros Realty Group's John Vranas celebrated 20 years of being a CPM at yesterday’s luncheon. We snapped him with Landscape Concepts Management's George Markoutsas and Melissa Scherb, who are excited about new Elly planters, which they've been using to enhance the environmental friendliness of their landscape design. The pots are made of a plastic that biodegrades quickly, so they can plant the whole thing in the ground quickly without damaging the soil.

Renaissance Man

You may know someone who likes to develop buildings, but McShane Development's new president Tom D'Alesandro likes to develop whole city centers. Tom joined McShane three months ago after starting his career developing a downtown plan for Reston, Va, right out of college. Since then, Tom has made the rounds through Texas and Georgia, as well as a previous stint in Chicago. He was drawn to McShane for its diversity: The company develops about one-third medical office buildings, one-third multi-family developments and one-third industrial properties. He's also been able to keep going to Texas, where he was previoiusly building a neighborhood plan for 90,000 population Woodlands.

New Model

Baxter's Terry Kreplin and Columbian Model and Exhibit Works's Catherine Tinker and Bill Bauman were the faces behind the Chicago Architecture Foundation's new Model City we showed you on Tuesday. The model was officially unveiled at a cocktail reception last night, complete with a lighting fixture that makes it appear as if the sun is setting over the city. Catherine pulled an all-nighter completing the three-inch thick proposal she submitted to CAF, and Baxter allowed Terry to create the model using Stereolithography, a technique that uses UV rays to solidify plastic, without charging CAF for his services. Catherine used four different architectural records to make sure the 50 feet to 1 inch scale model was correct. All those tiny architectural details are now even tinier!

CAF's Susan Ross and Columbia College's Alicia Berg check out the Water Tower area on CAF's new model city. Alicia used to be involved in city planning, so she was excited to see how the last decade of development was reflected in the model. A plan she was working on about five years ago for the downtown is going to the planning commission for approval soon, so she says now is a good time to make a model: after one major re-planning and before another. In the 100th Anniversary of the Burnham Plan, maybe it’s time we got something new.
